Jharkhand, a nine year old state carved out of erstwhile state of Bihar on November 15, 2000 constitutes the 28th state of the Republic of India. The state shares its border with Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. It has 24 Districts and 32620 villages and is a predominantly rural state with 78% of population living in more than 30,000 rural settlements, constituting 97.75% of its entire land area. Of its 79,720 square kilometers, forests cover 30%.The state boasts of rich fauna and flora. It has several major basic Industries and is one of the richest in Mineral resources in the country. As per 2001 census, the population of Jharkhand is 26.9 million, with a population density of 338 persons per square kilometer and sex ratio of 941. Scheduled Castes constitute 12% of the population while the proportion of Scheduled Tribe stands at 28%. The state has 31 Tribal groups residing in 112 scheduled blocks of the state. Of these tribal groups, there 9 primitive tribes (Birhor, Korwa, Savar, Asur, Pahariya, Sar Pahariya, Birgia, Kharia, Mahil) comprising 3% of total tribal population.
